Key Rules to Teach

Forward Movement: Pawns move forward one square at a time
First Move Special: On its first move, a pawn may move forward TWO squares
Capture Diagonally: Pawns capture enemy pieces diagonally forward
Cannot Move Backward: Pawns are the only piece that cannot retreat
Promotion: When a pawn reaches the opposite end, it becomes a Queen (or other piece)

Quick review: "Who can show me a pawn?" Introduce today's focus: "Pawns are the smallest pieces but they have special powers!"

Basic Movement Demonstration

Place a single pawn on the board
Show forward movement: "Pawns only move forward, never backward"
Demonstrate the first-move option: "On their first move, pawns can jump ahead TWO squares"
Practice: Have students move pawns on their boards

Capturing with Pawns

Key concept: "Pawns move forward but capture DIAGONALLY"
Set up capture scenarios on demo board
Practice activity: Place enemy pieces diagonally from pawns
Ask: "Can this pawn capture? Which piece can it take?"

Pawn Promotion

Explain: "When a pawn reaches the other side, something magical happens!"
Demonstrate promotion to Queen (most common choice)
Mention other promotion options (Rook, Bishop, Knight)

Pawn Race Game

Students play "Pawn Wars" with partners:

Each player gets only 8 pawns
First to get a pawn to the other side wins
Practice captures and movement in a simplified game

Wrap-Up

Review questions: "How do pawns move? How do they capture? What happens when they reach the end?"

Pawn Wars Game Rules

Set up only the pawns (8 white, 8 black)
White moves first
Players take turns moving one pawn
Capture opponent's pawns when possible
Win by: Getting a pawn to promotion OR capturing all enemy pawns

Teacher Tip: Use the phrase "Attack on the Diagonal!" to help students remember that pawns capture differently than they move. Consider having students say it aloud when making captures.
