Pirc Defense
The Pirc Defence (1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6) is a hypermodern defense where Black allows White to establish a broad pawn center, planning to undermine and attack it later with pieces from the flanks.

History
Named after Yugoslav grandmaster Vasja Pirc (1907-1980). The defense gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s as players sought alternatives to classical defenses. Often used as a surprise weapon.
